We are seeking a highly motivated PhD-level Scientist with experience in ion channel pharmacology to join our Lead Evaluation and Cellular Pharmacology (LECP) team in La Jolla. LECP plays a critical role within the larger Therapeutics Discovery organization, striving to deliver high-quality chemical leads and clinical compounds for all five Therapeutic Areas of Janssen R&D. In this position, the Scientist is expected to spend the bulk of their time in the lab, designing and running electrophysiology-based assays, in addition to analyzing and accurately reporting data.

Qualified candidates should be motivated to generate and share results, enjoy working closely with other co-workers, both inside and outside LECP, and willing to balance their efforts between unique projects. Beyond general scientific acuity, the job duties of the Scientist will depend upon a comprehensive understanding of medium/high-throughput screening, patch-clamp recordings, and data reporting software. Accordingly, it is crucial that they display enthusiasm to learn and become proficient in any areas where their prior experience is limited.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conceive of and implement hit-finding plans for high-throughput screening (HTS) campaigns, in collaboration with therapeutic area partners and chemistry teams.
  • Implement and troubleshoot weekly assays in support of medicinal chemistry efforts, assuring high-quality data analysis and reporting.
  • Exhibit an awareness of new technological advances and biological insights, such that they are applied to assays in the laboratory.
  • Thoughtfully integrate methodology details and results to prepare compelling scientific presentations for internal and external meetings.

Qualifications

Education:

  • PhD in Neuroscience or a related field (e.g. Physiology, Pharmacology), with a minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral experience.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Proficiency performing and analyzing manual and/or automated patch-clamp electrophysiology experiments is required.
  • Strong understanding of ion channel gating and membrane receptor pharmacology is required.
  • Mammalian or neuronal cell culture; ability to maintain multiple cell lines is required.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, along with proficiency using standard scientific software (e.g. Prism, Excel) is required.
  • Excellent writing skills: preparation of experimental records and a track record of peer-reviewed publications is required.
  • Strong oral communication skills and willingness to regularly present results to multidisciplinary project teams is required.
  • Flexibility to shift focus between multiple projects on a daily/weekly basis is required.

Preferred:

  • Experience mentoring and supervising non-PhD level scientists is preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of medium/high throughput cell-based assays, including development, implementation, and troubleshooting is preferred.
  • Familiarity with assay automation and miniaturization is preferred.
  • Experience working on small-molecule drug discovery campaigns is preferred.
  • Detailed knowledge of the patch-clamp method, as well as factors contributing to success in manual or automated patch-clamp experiments is preferred.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $102,000 to $163,300.
